QUESTION: Write about a memorable period in your life .
My grandmother came from Australia to live with us when i was ten years old . My life changed completely as a result of her dominating[影响,控制] presence .
Unlike before , i no longer had to come home to an empty house . It was heart warming at first coming home to the aroma[香味] of home cooked food . However, having grandmother waiting at home meant that i had to be home on time every day . I could not dawdle[游荡] along the way , or make a detour[绕道] to the convenience store . Whenever i was more than five minutes late , she would panic[恐慌] and wait for me at the void deck .
About two months after she came , she developed a fondness[喜爱] for Cantonese drama serials from the eighties . She knew her way about the neighbourhood and would rent drama serials . Every afternoon , the television set would be blasting[吹奏声,响声] with Chinese music and voices speaking rapidly[快速的] in Cantonese . The Cantonese drama serials were a welcome change to my silent afternoons alone . However , i soon found the noise very jarring[使烦躁,不和谐] . i tried asking her to turn down the volume , but since she was hard of hearing , she had to keep the volume relatively[相当的] high .
However , these were minor disruptions to my usual lifestyle . i enjoyed having my grandmother with me . i often chatted with my grandmother before going to bed . I would tell her about my day in halting Teochew and in turn she would give me advice . Once , she even offered to beat up a classmate who had been bullying me . She had jumped off my bed suddenly and showed me her Kung fu moves . She looked hilarious[滑稽的] in her baggy[肥大的] floral pyjamas and bare feet , and i tried hard not to burst out laughing . hugging her , i told her that i would speak to my teacher instead and that the school did not encourage our family members to confront our classmates.
Still , she was not convinced that i would be able to solve the problem . The next day , i found her standing with her arms behind her back at my school gate , glaring at every pupil who walked past . Fortunately , the bully was not in school that day or my grandmother might just have hit him .
My grandmother returned to Australia after living with us for half a year . i had got use to life with her around and once she left , home was a desolate place to be in . i spent more time at the library and at my friend's house instead.
